China's telco restructuring and the entry of China Telecom and China Netcom to the mobile market will drive sustained growth, with 965 million subs by 2012 and at a 5-year CAGR of 12%. Operator promotions and 3G rollout will result in significant growth in China's WVAS market at 22% CAGR inr the same period. Operators will continue to gain share from Service Providers, although new competitors for China Mobile may ease their pain in the medium term. China's handset market will expand to 197 million in 2008 and 267 million units by 2012, at a CAGR of 9%. China's internet users have surpassed those of the US and will reach 490 million by 2012 at a CAGR of 18%. The mobile internet market will take off, driven by 3G. Online games, online brand advertising and online search markets will expand rapidly at a 5-year CAGR of 33%, 37% and 51% respectively through 2012. Broadband subscribers in China will grow at a CAGR of 16% to 150 million by 2012.

China's online game market continues to show strong growth, driven by the rising number of online gamers and the increasing demand for online entertainment. In-house developed games now dominate the market, outstripping overseas licensed games. Although progress has been made across the value chain, time is running out to provide 3G service during the Beijing Olympic Games this August. China Mobile and vendors are facing a dilemma between pursuing advanced functionalities and handset stability. Some vendors are pursuing HSDPA, MBMS at the expense of stability of basic functions such as talk time, voice quality and power consumption, resulting in TD handset quality risk.
