Tencent's Trend-setting Portals Rake in Revenues from Gossip, Virtual Friends and Fantasy Worlds
This report is only available to clients who subscribe to:
china, handset, mobile_data, new_media, telecom
Tencent is widely recognized as one of the most successful internet firms in China. From its origins as an Instant Messaging (IM) provider, the company has executed an ambitious diversification strategy, adding a portal site, blog hosting, online games, online search, e-commerce, and online TV. Due to stricter oversight from mobile operators, Tencent's MVAS business is expected to struggle and its future is unclear. However, Tencent will mitigate any threats to MVAS revenues by exploiting the potential of portal advertising, online gaming, effective payment channels, and the eventual launch of 3G.

This report is only available to clients who subscribe to:
china, handset, mobile_data, new_media, telecom
Mobile enterprise applications have taken off in China in the last two years, and the market is growing rapidly. As mobile carriers seek to diversify their business away from voice, they see a potentially strong business line in providing Mobile Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for enterprises. But they need to gear up quickly by building up a client base, solutions and a strong ecosystem today before fixed-line carriers begin to compete head-to-head with them in 2009 or 2010.

China's Mobile SNS Market: A Rocky Road to Mobile Broadband
This report is only available to clients who subscribe to:
china, handset, mobile_data, new_media, telecom
The Mobile Social Networking Services (Mobile SNS) market is still in its infancy in China, and will highly depend on the development of the country's mobile internet for its growth.
Mobile SNS can be categorized into two major types: mobile SNS supplied by the mobile operators' own SPs, and mobile SNS provided by independent SPs. BDA believes mobile SNS by operator SPs is more profitable, though independent WAP-based and mobile IM models show much faster growth.

This report is only available to clients who subscribe to:
china, handset, mobile_data, new_media, telecom
Focused seemingly on growing revenues at
all costs, Huawei and ZTE continue to slug it
out in the global telecom infrastructure
market. While consolidation last year created
a new ‘Big 3' of European vendors -
Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks and
Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei and ZTE have been
climbing the ranks of second tier carriers,
and having a disproportionate impact in
developing markets especially.

IPTV vs. DTV: Is DTV Stealing the Show?
This report is only available to clients who subscribe to:
china, handset, mobile_data, new_media, telecom
Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) and Digital TV (DTV) are engaged in an intensifying battle for audiences in China. So far it appears that DTV, backed by cable operators, is pulling ahead of IPTV, backed by telcos. The number of DTV users is far ahead of IPTV with 12.6 million DTV households by end-2006, compared with just 0.6 million IPTV users. Over the next few years, we believe DTV will continue to grow at a much faster pace than IPTV. BDA forecasts DTV users will total 26 million by 2007, rising to 93 million by 2011. For IPTV, our forecast is a total of 1.3 million users by 2007, and 9.7 million by 2011.

Japan Mobile Update: 3G and Beyond
This report is only available to clients who subscribe to:
china, handset, mobile_data, new_media, telecom
Compared to the 5-6 million new subscribers a month in China, mobile growth in Japan of 4-5 million users a year seems rather dull. Yet with Average Revenue per User of JPY 6,500 (USD 54) compared to China's RMB 90 (USD 11) for China Mobile it is worth recalling how lucrative even small gains in the mature yet massive Japanese market can be for industry participants. Total subscribers reached 96.7 million at the end of March 2007, a c. 5% increase on the previous year, with penetration reaching about 77%. Total services revenues were more than JPY 9 trillion (USD 75 billion) in 2006, compared to China's RMB 306 billion (USD 38 billion)
